Helping a Daughter Prepare Her Parents' Home for Its Final Goodbye

Decluttering Case Study — Serangoon Central

Sometimes Decluttering Isn't About Tidying Up.

Sometimes, it’s about saying goodbye.

When our client contacted Total Cleanz, she wasn’t simply looking for a company to clear out a flat.

She had recently lost both of her parents.

The 3-room HDB apartment at Serangoon Central had been their home for many years, and it now had to be returned to HDB.

Every cupboard.

Every drawer.

Every photograph.

Every document.

Every item carried memories.

This was never going to be just another disposal job.

It was about helping a daughter preserve what mattered while letting go of everything else.

More Than A House Clearance

When people hear the words house clearance, they often imagine emptying cupboards and loading a truck.

But every estate tells a story.

This home belonged to our client’s late parents.

Everything they had collected over decades remained exactly where it had been left.

Kitchen supplies.

Clothing.

Furniture.

Old photographs.

Family keepsakes.

Important legal documents.

Every item needed careful attention.

Nothing could simply be thrown away.

Sorting Through A Lifetime Of Memories

One of the biggest responsibilities during this project was helping our client identify what should be kept.

As we worked through every room, we carefully checked:

• Family photographs

• Personal letters

• Certificates

• Important legal documents

• Financial papers

• Jewellery and valuables

• Keepsakes passed down through generations

Whenever we came across something meaningful, we stopped and discussed it with our client before making any decisions.

Professional organising is never about rushing.

It’s about protecting what cannot be replaced.

Supporting The Family When They Needed A Break

Partway through the project, our client developed a severe eczema flare-up and was no longer able to remain in the home.

Rather than asking her to continue under uncomfortable conditions, we encouraged her to rest while our team continued the work carefully.

Every important item was documented.

Nothing was removed without proper consideration.

When she returned later, we walked through everything together, explaining what had been kept, how it had been categorised and why.

This gave her peace of mind, knowing that important family belongings had not been overlooked.

Creating Order From Memories

Rather than purchasing new storage products, we looked around the home and found suitable storage containers that already belonged to the family.

We organised every keepsake into clear categories based on how our client intended to use them in the future.

Some examples included:

Each container was labelled and arranged logically, making it much easier for her to transport everything back to her own home and locate items in the future.

Simple systems often become the most meaningful when they are designed around the way someone naturally lives.

Nearly 70 Bags Removed

Once all meaningful belongings had been separated, our team began dismantling large furniture, including wardrobes and bed frames.

We then coordinated the disposal of unwanted household items.

By the end of the project, almost 70 bags of unwanted belongings, together with bulky furniture, had been removed from the property.

The home had been transformed from a lifetime of possessions into a clean, spacious apartment ready for HDB handover.

Preparing The Home For Handover

After the disposal work was completed, we carried out a thorough cleaning of the property.

Floors were vacuumed and mopped.

Bathrooms cleaned.

Kitchen wiped down.

Surfaces dusted.

The apartment was left clean, presentable and ready for the next stage of the handover process.

Our client no longer had to coordinate multiple contractors.

Everything had been completed under one project.

A Final Walkthrough

Before concluding the project, we invited our client back for a final inspection.

Instead of handing over a few random boxes, we walked through every category together.

We explained:

This final walkthrough ensured she left not with uncertainty, but with confidence that nothing important had been missed.

More Than Decluttering

Many people assume decluttering is simply about removing unwanted items.

Sometimes it is.

But projects like this remind us that organising is often deeply personal.

It requires patience.

Compassion.

Attention to detail.

And respect for the memories attached to every belonging.

Our role isn’t simply to empty a home.

It’s to help families move forward while preserving the things that matter most.

❤️ A Message From Cheryl

“This project reminded me that decluttering is rarely just about belongings. Every cupboard held memories, and every decision carried emotional weight. We never see ourselves as simply removing items—we see ourselves as helping families preserve what truly matters while taking care of the practical work that can feel overwhelming. Watching our client leave with organised keepsakes, important documents safely packed and knowing her parents’ home had been respectfully prepared for its final handover was one of the most meaningful moments for our team.”
